Study in Sweden: The Complete 2027 Guide

Sweden has quietly produced an outsized share of the technology the world uses daily — Spotify, Skype and IKEA all trace back to this one country of roughly ten million people.

That is not an accident: it reflects an education system built around independent thinking, close industry ties, and a culture that treats innovation as a national habit rather than a buzzword.

Tuition and Cost of Living

Non-EU/EEA students pay tuition at Swedish universities, typically SEK 90,000–170,000 per year — roughly €8,000–€15,000 — depending on the institution and subject.

One detail international applicants are often surprised by: PhD positions in Sweden are structured as paid university employment rather than fee-paying study, meaning doctoral researchers earn a salary rather than paying tuition.

Scholarships Worth Knowing About

The Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP) is the most significant funding route for students from eligible countries, covering tuition, living costs and travel for selected Master’s applicants.

Many universities — including KTH, Lund and Chalmers — also run their own tuition-reduction scholarships specifically for non-EU applicants, awarded automatically or by separate application at the time you apply.

Requirements

  • Academic transcripts verified and, in most cases, uploaded through the national application portal
  • English proficiency, typically IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 5.5 for most Master’s programmes
  • Application through Sweden’s single centralised application system covering nearly all universities
  • Proof of funds to cover tuition and living costs for a residence permit application
  • A completed statement of purpose for competitive programmes and scholarship applications

Where Swedish Graduates End Up Working

Sweden’s strengths map onto specific industries:

  • Renewable energy engineering
  • Automotive manufacturing through Volvo
  • Telecom research and development through Ericsson
  • Technology and startup companies in Stockholm

Sweden also offers international graduates a favourable route to apply for a residence permit to seek work or start a business after completing their degree.

Intakes

The primary intake is September — autumn semester — typically opening in October and closing in January the preceding year among the earliest deadlines in Europe.

A smaller spring intake exists but is rare.
